Can I break a lease

Your contract should spell out the terms under which the lease can be broken without penalty. You could be held liable for the remainder of the lease term. You could also lose your security deposit. Contact a lawyer for legal advice in your specific situation. Real estate agents are prohibited by law to give legal advice and what I have mentioned is general information in this type of matter and should not be treated as legal advice. Ideally you should discuss with your landlord and try to negotiate terms both of you can live with. Whatever you agree to, make sure it is in writing.
